Calvin Pendleton was born in Hope, Maine, in 1811. As a young man, he left farm-life and studied to become a doctor. Missionaries converted him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He came to Nauvoo in 1839, where he treated his neighbors without charge. He married Sally Ann Seavey and built a block home at this location. To support his family, Calvin worked with Jonathan Browning as a gunsmith and taught school in his home.

Calvin and his family left Nauvoo in 1846. At Winter Quarters, he was asked to remain with Jonathan Browning to provide guns and blacksmithing for the pioneers who were headed west. While there, Sally gave birth to a baby boy. Sadly, their little daughter, Emeline, died, followed by her mother in the fall of 1847. Calvin married Phebe B. Smith who bore two more children before she passed away in Winter Quarters. Calvin then married Sarah Ann Newberry. Together they had two more children, and finally, in 1852, they departed for the West.

The Pendletons settled in Parowan, Utah, where Calvin remained until his death in 1873. He served in many church and civic responsibilities and was a highly respected member of his community. He dedicated his life to the service of his fellow man and his God.

The present log cabin/school was rebuilt in 1990/91, using many hand tools available in the 1840s. Visitors have fun doing lessons on old-fashioned slates and learn fascinating facts about life in Old Nauvoo.
