The Pioneer Saints Cemetery

The Burial Grounds were established in 1842 on the north side of the old Carthage Road. The City Cemetery that was once near the intersection of Durphy and White Streets had become filled because of the many deaths in early Nauvoo.

Today, a bronze monument of a grieving family stands sentinel over this sacred cemetery, a peaceful and wooded resting place for early pioneers.

To memorialize many of those pioneers for whom no marker now exists, a kiosk at the cemetery includes the names of many of those who died in Nauvoo.

This kiosk houses the names of many early Latter-day Saints who passed away in the Nauvoo area

One Response to Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds

  1. David Little says:

There is no mention of the Old Nauvoo burial grounds when in Nauvoo…the location is a bit hidden, but definitely worth seeing…it’s very humbling to see the memorial and to think of the many children that perished in Nauvoo. [ed: For information about the cemetery, see Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds]
