Brigham Young built this home from 1842 through 1845
Brigham Young, second president of the LDS Church, was born in Whitingham, Vermont. When the Youngs came to Nauvoo, they settled across the river in Montrose, Iowa. Brigham departed on a mission to England, and while he was gone, his wife, Mary Ann, procured a building lot in Nauvoo and moved her family into an unfinished log cabin. After Brigham returned, he completed the cabin and then built this home on the same lot. The Youngs lived here with their six children until they left for the west.
In this room many important decisions were made for the Latter-day Saints' journey to the Rocky Mountains in fulfillment of Joseph Smith's 1842 prophecy
After Joseph Smith was murdered at Carthage, Brigham, as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, assumed leadership of the Church. He added an east wing to his home, where he met with the other apostles to continue the work that Joseph Smith had begun. They completed the temple and planned for the trek to the west. Brigham directed the migration of thousands of refugees to the Rocky Mountains, and has been called by historians “the Great American Moses.” He is revered by Latter-day Saints as a prophet of God.
Visitors to this home will hear the letter written by Mary Ann to Brigham, while he was on a special mission in the eastern states, telling him of Joseph Smith’s death. They will also see evidence of Brigham’s carpentry skills, and view restored china, found when archaeologists excavated the above-ground root cellar.
